About hydraulic seals

Hydraulic seals keep oil inside a cylinder and dirt out. We stock piston seals, rod seals, U-cups, PTFE cap seals, compact seals and vee packings in polyurethane (PU), nitrile (NBR), Viton (FKM) and bronze-filled PTFE, for presses, earth-moving machines, machine tools and injection moulding machines.

Common questions

What is the difference between a piston seal and a rod seal?

A piston seal seals the piston against the cylinder bore, so it is sized on the bore diameter. A rod seal sits in the cylinder head and seals around the moving rod, so it is sized on the rod diameter. Most cylinders also need a wiper and guide rings.

Which is better for hydraulic seals, PU or nitrile?

Polyurethane (PU) resists wear and extrusion and suits most mobile and industrial cylinders up to about 80 °C. Nitrile (NBR) or fabric-reinforced rubber copes better with heat and rough rods, and Viton (FKM) is used for higher temperatures.
